In their motion for a resolution, the Greens/EFA list five pillars on which an enhanced EU economic governance and integration must be based. They call for the full recognition and promotion of the social economy as an alternative economic model, linking economic activities with the realisation of social, health, employment and housing policy goals, responding to needs at a local level and the aim of employment creation.

The Greens/EFA consider that an effective multilateral response to the crisis requires a systemic multidimensional regulatory reform. They deplore that the G20 did not come up with any measure to deter financial speculation, by proposing e.g. a financial transaction tax. They also regret the lack of progress towards agreement for the sharing among industrialised countries of the global public climate financing need.
